"Life in a Hospital Pharmacy"
Lead Pharmacy Technician
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
On February 27, 2019, Candice Smith, the lead pharmacy technician at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, presented a guest lecture to current pharmacy technician students about the practices, protocols, and employment processes utilized by the Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health System (RWJBH).
Ms. Smith went into detail regarding the role of a pharmacy technician, career opportunities, and the training process employed by RWJBH. The role of a pharmacy technician within RWJBH always revolves around the patient and patient care. Pharmacy technicians may have to cover day, evening, or night schedules. Their exposure can range from the general/med floor to ICU or Oncology. There are significant opportunities for career advancement and additional training. Ms. Smith gave a real-life example of a coworker at Robert Wood Johnson who was able to transition out of the hospital setting to an oncology office where she was hired as a chemotherapy pharmacy technician.
The guest lecture was very informative and provided our students with a glimpse of the inner workings of a hospital pharmacy. We are thankful that Ms. Smith was willing to provide AIMS students' with some valuable insight and look forward to having her back in the future.
